Following the Second World War, an ingenious English cryptologist,
Michael Ventris, managed to decipher them. In this way, he offered a
valuable gift to the world, as it shed light on life two thousand years
before Christ. There are many points of evidence which indicate both
olive trees and olive oil. People of that time not only cultivated olive
trees but also scented their oil with herbs. They produced aromatic oil
and this was offered along with the non-scented oil to the gods. On one
of the tablets there is even an olive shown as a form of food.
The ideograms with which the Minoans and later the Mycenaeans
declared their olive oil in a shorthand type are quite impressive.
A symbol very similar to the olive tree itself. The ideogram which
represents the olive looks like an olive tree flower and a special
ideogram was used for the olive oil.
